What is strabismus?

What is strabismus?

It is the cause of vision loss in a small number of young children. Because of this, especially in the rural areas of our country, young children are seen to be embarrassed and cover themselves, isolate themselves from the community, and stay away from school.

Even the community has a distorted view of the issue, and the knowledge about the solution is limited.

In my scientific definition, strabismus means that one or both of our eyes lose their natural ability to be straight ahead (in a normal central position) to some degree or completely.

How many types of strabismus extensions are there?

In general and in simple terms, we can look at four types. These are:

1. Esodeviation

2. Exodeviation

3. Hyperdeviation

4. Hypodeviation

Among these, Esodeviation is the problem that is seen primarily in the society, especially in children, causing high vision problems.

What is the harm caused by eye twitching in children?

When the eyes lose the ability to be directly in front of children, the image created on the back part of the eye (Retina) and the interpretation on the visual part of our brain (visual cortex) becomes blurred.

This condition causes the developing brain to make a decision that is useful to the child after putting it in visual confusion for a certain period of time.

This condition causes the part of the brain that interprets the image coming from the blurred eye (if the child does not receive the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time) to slow down its growth, to be unable to function and eventually to go back to a difficult loss of vision, which is called Ambylopia in scientific terms.

What are the symptoms?

Most of the children do not inform their families about the vision problems they face. However, family members, teachers, or health professionals may notice the movement. (It is usually noticed when they are tired from playing games.)

Among the visual problems they have

     - Seeing things as two

     - Decreased vision

     - The feeling of eye strain and fatigue... are mentioned.

What are the reasons?

Various problems occur directly in the muscles that help to move our eyes and the power imbalance that follows

- Damage to the blood vessels that feed the muscles that help to move our eyes

- Nerve weakness, damage

- when there are injuries and developmental disorders in different parts of our brain

- When there is a vision problem (refractive errors) that can be corrected with glasses

When to consult a doctor?

Naturally, babies may have one or more of the above types of strabismus after birth. But within 4-6 months after birth, this strabismus should disappear, if not, consult an ophthalmologist near you.

What is the purpose of treatment and treatment?

1. Prevention of Ambylopia in children. how is?

a) Correction of refractive error by using appropriate glasses prescribed by an ophthalmologist

b) Stimulating the affected eye by dimming the safe eye using prescription glasses, drops, or an eye mask.

2. For children (to prevent ambylopia) and for adults (for cosmetic and functional improvement (such as relief of diplopia, stereopsis improvement)) by performing surgery on the eye muscles to return to the natural position.

Family things to do?

Taking her children to an ophthalmologist on a regular and consistent basis and ensuring that they receive appropriate treatment on time.
