why breast feeding is contraindicated????



The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that infants should be exclusively breastfed or given breast milk for 6 mo. Breastfeeding should be continued with the introduction of complementary foods for 1 yrs. or longer.

Breastfeeding has very important short- and long-term medical and neurode developmental advantages. Some of the benefits of breastfeeding are listed below

it prevents diarrheal illness, Hospitalization, Infant mortality, Allergy, ear infection, and  Urinary tract infection; it also decreases chronic diseases like Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, Childhood cancer, and blood cancer. Most importantly it is economically safe for parents, it did not need storage transportation and it is easily accessible for the mother

Mostly breastfeeding has no absolute contraindication to be given to the child.

contraindications

 1The first one is maternal HIV, In this condition in the United States, breastfeeding is contraindicated. But here in Ethiopia, for a child born from HIV positive mother breastfeeding is not contraindicated and the mother should have to give exclusively for the first 6 months but to 6 months after complementary feeding starts she should have to discontinue breastfeeding because the transmission is high as a result of gastrointestinal irritation.

2. Hepatitis B infection of a mother, this is not a contraindication for breastfeeding; so in this case, the Infants routinely receive hepatitis B immune globulin and hepatitis B vaccine if the mother is HBsAg positive. No delay in the initiation of breastfeeding is required. so the child continues his feeding

 3. a mother with active Tuberculosis infection Breastfeeding is contraindicated until completion of approximately 2 weak of appropriate maternal therapy.

Ø  4. Varicella-zoster infection Infant should not have direct contact with active lesions. The infant should receive immune globulin.

Ø   5. Breastfeeding is contraindicated with active herpetic lesions of the breast but in another area; which means in the face, and abdomen. chest etc, it is not contraindicated.

Ø  6. cytomegalovirus(CMV) infection May be found in the milk of mothers who are CMV seropositive. Transmission through human milk causing symptomatic illness in term infants is uncommon.

Ø  7. Hepatitis C infection of a mother, Breastfeeding is not contraindicated.

Ø  .8. Alcohol intake of a mother is in moderate amount is not contraindicated but heavily and binge drinking is contraindicated

    9. smoking is not a contraindication to breastfeeding.

Ø 10.  Chemotherapy and radiopharmaceutical treatment of a mother, Breastfeeding is generally contraindicated.
